Students

The UF Engineering Innovation Institute and UF Engineering Leadership Institute are instilling a culture of innovation and leadership in students through experiential and curricular based education that focuses on creativity, innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurship skill sets to prepare Gator Engineers to assume innovation leadership roles in their professional careers.

Freshman Introduction to Innovation and Leadership – The Institute impacts undergraduate students from the beginning of their time at the University of Florida.  The Institute participates in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering Introduction to Engineering (EGN1002) course taken by most UF freshman who have declared engineering as their major field of study.  Introduction to Engineering is a 1 credit hour elective designed to introduce students to the engineering majors at UF.  The course meets weekly and the Institute provides a weekly lecture highlighting leadership in innovation.

Integrated Product and Process Design – The Integrated Product and Process Design program is an innovative educational initiative at the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, University of Florida. Our students work in small multidisciplinary teams under the guidance of faculty coaches and industrial liaison engineers to design and build authentic industrial products for sponsoring companies.

Integrated Technology Ventures – This two semester experiential education offering involves the formation of virtual start-up companies to develop engineering prototypes and business collateral (market studies, business plans, investor presentations, etc.) to advance UF COE technologies to commercialization and provide students with a real world engineering entrepreneurship education.  The program brings together undergraduate engineer, MBA, and law students under the direction of a virtual start-up company management team – an externally recruited serial entrepreneur who serves as the company CEO and faculty coaches who serve as the company management.  The program has been active since 2003 and typically involves 2-3 virtual companies per year.

Engineering Innovation Certificate and Courses – The COE has expanded its engineering innovation curricular offerings to include an entrepreneurship certificate program for undergraduate and graduate engineers across all disciplines.  The elements of the Entrepreneurship Certificate are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in engineering leadership, engineering innovation, and engineering entrepreneurship.

Engineering Innovation Internship – In collaboration with Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering alumni, students will be given an opportunity to participate in an internship experience aimed at giving them insight into the world of venture capital and startups.  In addition to their daily work in a local company, students will meet weekly for a group seminar led by a local entrepreneur.  Students will be expected to bring their experience back to campus by mentoring other students in the entrepreneurship program.  A pilot program is planned for spring 2012.
