The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is widely known because its research has produced proof of concept that led to self-driving cars, stealth aircraft, GPS, the internet, among other breakthroughs. Less well known is that its breadth of scientific inquiry is exceptionally diverse—crossing over into nearly every one of our departments—and that it actively seeks out new investigators to bring novel ideas forward.

Few researchers realize how much they can offer the agency, especially if they do not count the Department of Defense as a traditional sponsor. Thus, HWCIE is hosting a workshop to explain how the agency operates, which is not well described in the public domain. One of our own and a former DARPA PM, Jack Judy, will familiarize us with the process and give practical guidance regarding how and when to:

• engage PMs and their assistants (called SETAs)
• elucidate ideas in white papers (and the so-called Heilmeier catechism)
• meaningfully respond to broad agency announcements (BAAs)

If you are open to participating, please contact Eva Achero at eachero@eng.ufl.edu, to reserve your spot. The event will be held November 17 from 12:00 – 4:00 PM.
