UF in Pavia: Engineering and Arts in Italy is a 8 week program that offers students a unique opportunity to learn Physics 2 at University of Pavia (established in 1361) while exploring the history of art and engineering practices of the European Renaissance in Italy.

About the program

The objectives of this program are to

  • Introduce students to the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics
  • Explore the history of art and engineering practices of the European Renaissance in Italy
  • Gain an insight into the great minds of the Renaissance – including da Vinci, Galileo, and others where they actually conducted their research and studies
  • Understand important principles of engineering and physics that were developed during the Renaissance and compare them with current practices
  • Learn about engineering practices and innovation in Italy through company visits in the automotive, manufacturing.
  • Evaluate conceptual and aesthetic issues through hands on projects.
  • Sharpen students’ analytical tools for interpreting visual culture and technological innovation.
  • Develop basic technical knowledge and applicable skills in a variety of artistic mediums.

Location

Italy, officially the Italian Republic, is located in south-central Europe, consisting of a peninsula delimited by the Alps and surrounded by several islands. The country covers a total area of 301,340 km2 (116,350 sq mi) and shares land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, and the enclaved microstates of Vatican City and San Marino. Italy has a territorial exclave in Switzerland (Campione) and a maritime exclave in the Tunisian Sea (Lampedusa). With around 60 million inhabitants, Italy is the fourth-most populous member state of the European Union.

Among the major industries in Italy are machinery, iron and steel, chemicals, food processing,  motor vehicles, and ceramics, making it an ideal location for an international engineering program. Students will be able to experience the rich and colorful Italian culture of history, art, architecture, and natural beauty, as well as explore the high tech aspect of Italy in terms of engineering design and manufacturing.

Pavia is known for its art and culture, possessing historic buildings and ancient churches alongside museums, libraries, cinemas and theatres that line its narrow streets. Pavia is a small city in northern Italy with 70,000 inhabitants and over 24,000 students, located only 30 km south of Milan, by regional and suburban trains, every 10 minutes. Founded in Roman times, it was the capital of the Kingdom of the Lombards for over two centuries and this fascinating legacy of narrow streets, ancient churches, elegant buildings remain intact and alive. Life in Pavia is both pleasant, affordable and culturally stimulating, with 19 museums, 2 cultural centers, 22 libraries, 4 cinemas and theatres, 10 social-cultural meeting halls, 3 civic schools of music and arts. Several sport activities are promoted by the University Sports Centre (CUS) by offering a wide range of courses, championships and tournaments.

The University of Pavia, founded in 1361, is one of the world’s oldest academic institutions. Like Oxford and Cambridge in the UK, Pavia has a unique College system in Italy, dating back to the 16th century. Each of its 20 colleges has its own particular history and opportunities to offer. College life aims at creating an open community where academic achievements, traditional events and sporting rivalries all play a role. Students will enjoy taking PHY 2049 Physics 2 and PHY 2049L Physics 2 lab from knowledgeable professors from University of Pavia.

Pavia is located 30 minutes by train from Milan, a leading alpha global city with a strong education, arts, commerce, engineering, technology, and research presence. Milan is the industrial and financial hub of Italy and home to any top universities, including Politecnico di Milano, the largest technical university in Italy. Milan is home to the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology, the largest science and technology museum in Italy, and dedicated to Italian painter and scientist Leonardo da Vinci. 

Milan Cathedral, called Duomo di Milano in Italian, is one of the world’s largest Gothic cathedrals. It is located in the heart of the city.
Fun Facts:
  • Think of Italy as southern Europe? Rome is actually further north than New York City.
  • The piano, the thermometer, and violin were invented in Italy.
  • The average Italian consumes half a pound of bread a day.
  • Alessandro Volta invented the electric battery in 1800 while he was a professor of experimental physics at the University of Pavia. (What a great way to learn Physics 2 in the birthplace of the electric battery!)

  • PHY 2049 Physics 2 with Calculus (Taught by University of Pavia faculty – 3 transfer credits)
  • PHY 2049L Physics 2 with Lab (Taught by University of Pavia faculty – 1 transfer credit)
  • EGN 4932 Engineering Art: The Italian Perspective (3 UF credits)

Total Number of Credits Offered: 4 transfer credits and 3 UF credits

Housing

You will stay in a double room with UF students in a historical Italian residence hall. Program fee includes housing fees.
