A former Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering student startup, Altavian, was recently acquired by FLIR Systems, Inc. FLIR Systems is a world-leading technology company focused on intelligent sensing solutions for defense and industrial applications. Founded by Engineering Innovation Institute alumnus, Thomas Rambo (BSAE ’10; MS ’12), and Thomas Reed (BSAE ’10; MS ’12), Altavian is a Gainesville-based startup that designs and manufactures Group 1 UAS solutions for long and short range operations for defense and public safety customers. It is one of five drone manufacturers approved by the U.S. Department of Defense under the Blue sUAS program to sell to the U.S. military and federal agencies.
