Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Established in 1910, the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) has built an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and service. The department is housed in three buildings: Larsen, Benton and the New Engineering Building.

As one of the largest engineering departments, ECE has an enrollment of approximately 750 undergraduate and 400 graduate students. It is consistently ranked as one of the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report.

What do Electrical & Computer Engineers do?

Electrical engineers are responsible for a wide range of technologies, from portable music players to the global positioning system. They design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacture of electronic equipment such as broadcast and communications systems. Many work in areas closely related to computers.

Computer hardware engineers research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, networks, and routers. By creating new directions in computer hardware, these engineers create rapid advances in computer technology.

Research Program

Research in ECE serves the dual purposes of generating new fundamental knowledge and educating the graduate students who contribute to the advancement of knowledge through their thesis research. Research in electrical and computer engineering at UF encompasses a broad spectrum of areas which reflect the wide range of interest and expertise of the faculty, most of whom are engaged in research.
