Decarbonizing Resource Management: Pathways Through Circular Engineering

Achieving a low-carbon future requires a shift from the traditional linear approach to one that views waste as a valuable resource and integrates circularity into engineering practice. This seminar will present a circular engineering perspective on decarbonizing materials and resource systems through sustainable resource recovery, waste valorization, and life cycle thinking. Drawing on research in municipal solid waste management, hydrothermal carbonization, biochar, wastewater sludge valorization, and life cycle assessment (LCA), the seminar will highlight how organic and inorganic waste streams can be transformed into valuable materials, renewable energy, and other beneficial products while reducing environmental impacts. Case studies will demonstrate how engineering innovation, supported by systems-level sustainability assessment, can help identify practical and scalable pathways for decarbonization. The seminar will also discuss the role of circular economy principles, resource efficiency, and evidence-based decision-making in developing resilient materials and resource systems that contribute to climate change mitigation and sustainable development.
