Abstract: Analysis of police in-vehicle technologies and their impact on officers’ driving safety
Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of police line of duty injuries and deaths. These crashes are mainly attributed to the use of in-vehicle technologies and multi-tasking while driving. In a series of studies using human performance modeling, driving simulations, ride-along observations, and qualitative evaluations, we investigated the effect of in-vehicle technologies and advanced driver-assistance systems on officers’ driving performance, distraction, and cognitive workload under normal and pursuit driving conditions. The outcomes of these investigations provided recommendations for enhanced technology solutions in police vehicles to improve officer safety and performance, and emphasized the need for more training to improve officers’ tactical driving skills and multi-tasking behavior.
