Dr. Kevin Veal joined the Department of Energy in 2010 and serves as the Director of the Office of International Nuclear Safeguards in DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration.  He oversees programs that implement International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards in the United States and outreach partnerships with over 70 foreign partners to strengthen the implementation of nuclear safeguards worldwide.  He is the chair of the United States Support Program to IAEA Safeguards that provides financial and technical support to the IAEA’s Department of Safeguards.  Kevin worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1999 to 2010.  During that time, he specialized in the development and implementation of nuclear measurement technologies for international safeguards.  From 2005 to 2008, he served as the DOE representative on the U.S. delegation to the Six-Party Talks seeking the verifiable elimination of the North Korean nuclear program, spending almost five months on the ground in Yongbyon over 10 trips.  From 2013 to 2015, Kevin was part of the U.S. negotiating team for the P5+1 process with Iran to address the Iranian nuclear program.  Kevin received a Ph.D. in nuclear physics from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1998, and a B.S. in physics from Mississippi State University in 1993.
